Development of Lithium-ion Batteries in Power Tools

A lithium-ion battery or Li-ion battery is a type of rechargeable battery. Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used for portable electronics, electric vehicles, military and aerospace applications, and are growing in popularity for cordless power tools.

Lithium Ion Battery Development

In the 1990s, lithium ion technology began to gain customer acceptance, causing it to become the battery with the fastest-growing popularity. Lithium battery development was first explored because of the safety concerns of lithium metal batteries. Despite being slightly lower in energy density than lithium metal, lithium ion is extremely safe when charged and discharged following specified safety precautions. For many years, the only suitable battery for portable equipment, such as mobile computing and wireless communications was nickel-cadmium. Pioneer work on the lithium battery began in 1912, however it wasn’t until the 1970s when the first non-rechargeable lithium batteries became commercially accessible. After that, lithium batteries ushered in rapid development and were used in various scenarios.

Benefits of a Lithium Ion Battery

1.Lithium is the lightest metal and has the best electrochemical potential with the largest energy density compared to weight. Lithium ion has twice the energy density of nickel-cadmium and there is an opportunity for a higher energy density. Lithium ion batteries have a high cell voltage of 3.6 volts, meaning battery packs can be designed with just one cell, allowing most mobile phones to run on a single cell.

2.Lithium ion batteries are low maintenance and do not need priming when new, one standard charge is all that is necessary. Lithium ion batteries also have a low self-discharge, less than half the self-discharge of nickel-based batteries. Cells can also be adapted to provide an extremely high current to applications such as power tools.

3.Lithium ion batteries do not have a memory effect, which is a detrimental process that causes partial charge/discharge cycles to cause a battery to stay at a lower capacity. They also do not contain toxic cadmium which means they can be disposed of easily when compared with Ni-Cd batteries.

Trends Driving the Power Tools' Market:

With the growing prevalence of cordless power tools, and with the development of market demand,There has been a shift from corded to cordless power tools. While corded tools still possess considerable sales, the shift to cordless is substantial.  power tools have been convenient resources for various industries, aiding workers from all sorts of disciplines. With special features like electric motors, power tools help eliminate strenuous, manual labor.

Cordless power tools include batches of battery-powered tools like band saws, circular saws, crimpers, hammer drills, impact drivers, impact wrenches and many others. These tools are ideal for welding, sanding, cutting, metalworking and other applications. The shift to cordless power tools shows the desire for a more mobile tool. Present day cordless tools are also able to run longer on one charge than they have in recent years. For example, major power tool manufacturer gained a 5% increase in power tools sales due to the introduction of cordless power tools.

Then another change in the power tools market is underway, that of lithium-ion batteries, replacing Nickel-Cd or nickel-cadmium powered tools as well as nickel-metal hydride powered tools. As the advantages of lithium ion batteries mentioned above, A lithium ion battery is smaller and more lightweight than its counterpart and has no self-discharge, allowing it to be stored for months while keeping its life. Lithium ion batteries also offer a higher energy density, or Watt hours in a smaller package size, making them more efficient. This allows the battery to draw more current and work longer than the Nickel-Cd variety. The average Lithium ion battery maintains a useable charge for 12 months, while the NiCd dies after only a few months. There are hundreds of batteries that employ lithium ion, all of which have different voltages and capabilities.

With an upward demand on an international scale, more manufacturers will enter the market and compete with the major players, which may contribute to upticks in innovation. 5StarTool will be one of the most powerful competitors
